Six Years, Five Lakh Lives: Gujarat Yog Board Drives Holistic Wellness Revolution
Gandhinagar, 18 June 2025: Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who introduced the world to June 21 as the International Day of Yog, the Gujarat State Yog Board (GSYB) marks six impactful years since its formation on June 21, 2019. Guided by Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel and Sports & Youth Minister Shri Harsh Sanghavi, the Board has led a far-reaching wellness movement, touching lives across the state.
In just six years, GSYB has trained over 1.5 lakh yog instructors and certified more than 1,500 professional coaches. These efforts have helped establish daily yog sessions at more than 5,000 locations across Gujarat, directly involving over 5 lakh citizens in regular practice. The initiative is a testament to Gujarat’s commitment to embedding yog in everyday life, aligning with the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’ and the state’s belief in Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi.
Global Recognition Through Record-Breaking Participation
Gujarat’s yog movement has earned international acclaim with two Guinness World Records. On International Yog Day 2023, Surat hosted the world’s largest yog session with 1,47,952 participants. This was followed by another record on January 1, 2024, where over 50,000 people performed Surya Namaskar simultaneously across 108 locations, including the iconic Modhera Sun Temple. Events such as Yog Shibir and Yogotsav-2023 have drawn lakhs of participants from Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and several rural areas. Dedicated summer camps have introduced yog to children, fostering healthy habits from a young age.
Promoting Health, Creating Livelihoods, Fostering Inclusion
More than just awareness, GSYB has focused on real impact. Inspired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s remarks in Mann Ki Baat, the “Healthy Gujarat – Obesity Free Gujarat” campaign has targeted lifestyle-related issues such as obesity, diabetes, and stress. Success stories like that of Deeptiben Dholakia, who overcame multiple health challenges and lost 15 kg in four months, reflect the programme’s positive outcomes. GSYB has also emerged as a source of employment. Nearly 5,000 trainers now receive monthly stipends, turning yog into a sustainable livelihood. As a certified Personnel Certification Body (PrCB) under the Yog Certification Board, GSYB ensures quality through structured certification. Plans are in place to establish “Yog Nilayam” studios to 51 locations.
Looking Ahead: Scaling Yog as a Way of Life
The Board is now working towards a wider outreach, taking yog to every village and urban ward, scaling up to 50,000 daily classes, and training 10 lakh practitioners in the near future. Efforts are also underway to integrate yog into education and healthcare systems across the state, turning it into a lifestyle rather than just a daily practice.
As the Gujarat State Yog Board celebrates Six impactful years, it continues to promote well-being, transform lives, and establish Gujarat as a spiritual and wellness hub, translating Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s global vision into a people-centric movement across the state.
